Overview
Standardized Foundations Database for Combat Systems (2005-337-R32)
Project Team:
- Ingalls Shipbuilding
2014
NSRP ASE Investment: $145K
Objective:
This project investigated the cost savings potential of ship-wide foundations standardization and developed the preliminary infrastructure for a flexible database that can be used for future naval ship design to significantly reduce ship production costs. The project focused on an initial group of 114 deck-mounted Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) foundations on LHA 6 and developed the required information that needed to be captured to begin standardization efforts. During the course of the project, Ingalls also investigated common issues encountered by the production shops that handle foundations to determine what cost drivers exist. Estimates from this investigation have shown that there is a potential reduction in engineering labor hours and production costs relating to the design and production of shipboard foundations if full implementation of a foundation standardization effort can be achieved.
