2013

Objective:
The objective of this project was to find cost-effective, space-efficient solutions for reducing concentrations of heavy metals in shipyard storm water runoff. Objectives were met through baseline sampling at participating shipyards to determine the amount of adsorbent polymer sponge media needed for each yard test site. Results of the sampling indicate that reductions in Total Suspended Solids (TSS) may play a significant role in reducing the amount of total recoverable metals; however, the sponge media utilized appeared to degrade over time. A follow-on panel project was awarded in 2013 to examine additional adsorbent materials and filtration units in an effort to implement cost-effective solutions for meeting environmental regulatory compliance across the industry.
