Identifying Opportunities to Reduce Grinding Labor

  • Identifying Opportunities to Reduce Grinding Labor
Overview

Identifying Opportunities to Reduce Grinding Labor (2013-440)

Project Team:

  • Newport News Shipbuilding
  • VT Halter Marine

2013

NSRP ASE Investment: $149K

Objective:

The goal of this project was to identify opportunities for shipyards to reduce labor by using more efficient grinding methods and/or reduce the total amount of grinding that must be done. Three shipyards individually documented their current grinding states including reasons for grinding, tools and consumables used, past grinding improvement initiatives, and improvement opportunities. Shipyard representatives met to review their current states and to identify improvement opportunities. The outcome was documentation of nineteen industry opportunities to reduce shipbuilding costs and improve safety of the work force.
