Overview
Optimizing the Design/Manufacturing of FI Interface Adapters with a Focus on Cost, Weight and Reusability (2015-467)
Project Team:
- Newport News Shipbuilding
- Ingalls Shipbuilding
2015
NSRP ASE Investment: $148K
Objective:
The purpose of this project was to understand the requirements for designing / building equipment “Interface Adapters” (foundations) on various Navy platforms fitted with Flexible Infrastructure (FI). Experience with prior projects and with the FI Support Systems technology indicated that there is a unique opportunity for standardization of foundations across platforms. Thus, this project studied the impact of “one-size-fits-all” Interface Adapters (IA) for the same equipment used on the various Navy platforms. It identified and documented the steps for designing and building IAs with a focus on reducing cost and weight and optimizing reusability. Finally, case studies were presented on specific equipment to validate the research.
Key Deliverables:
Request Final Report from NSRP–Limited Distribution to authorized government agencies and NSRP ASE Program representatives
