Overview
Ship Specification Review of the Various Surface Ship Spec's to Identify the Technical Gaps between the Elements of Flexible Infrastructure and the Ship Spec. Requirements (2015-468)
Project Team:
- Newport News Shipbuilding
- Ingalls Shipbuilding
2015
NSRP ASE Investment: $149K
Objective:
The overall purpose of this project was to identify the technical gaps between ship specifications for selected platforms (CVN, LHA, LPD, DDG) and Flexible Infrastructure (FI) technologies. This project leveraged previous knowledge gained from the installation of FI on aircraft carriers to develop a comprehensive matrix of technical gaps for each Navy platform type being considered for FI. This project also provided a recommended path forward on how these gaps should be closed. The Ship Specifications review identified the following information which was populated into a Specification Cross Reference Matrix:
- Sections in the specifications where requirements and technology are in disagreement (Shock, Grounding and Bonding, Corrosion, Structure and other areas as applicable)
- Solutions used on carriers to mitigate the technical gaps and applicability to other shipbuilding programs
- The Technical Warrant Holders that should be involved in providing final approval of solutions to the technical gaps
