Objective:
Define and develop a web-based tool that integrates planning, design, production control, material control and scheduling with the goal of mitigating re-work and reducing total ownership costs.
Summary:
The team developed and validated a project management approach to shipbuilding and ship maintenance through the delivery of a web-based production engineering and management solution tailored to the needs of the shipbuilding and repair industry, which includes a “deck plate friendly”, reliable, exportable implementation process using planning and production engineering methodologies. The solution integrates planning, design, production control, material control, and daily scheduling with other production processes. Additionally, the web-based solution enables shipyards to reduce project costs and cycle time through process standardization as well as provides the ability to perform rapid re-planning while maintaining alignment of all project stakeholders in real time. The SPS | ShipFlow solution was piloted on projects at two mid-tier shipyards, resulting in:
- A first-of-class ship delivered on schedule with 10%+ cost savings.
- Reduced overtime burden and amount of re-work.
- Increased production commitment reliability by 40%.
