Objective:
Develop an interface between a NavisWorks viewer and the WorkSIM planning software to allow for the evaluation of production plans based on a 3D product model and the available resources for mid-tier shipyards.
Summary:
The Process Oriented Visual Planning Tool (POV) project developed an interface between a NavisWorks viewer and the WorkSIM planning software to allow for the evaluation of production plans based on a 3D product model and the available resources. The software allows for a 3D product model to populate the WorkSIM program with assemblies and other products based on the model content. Product attributes such as weight and size are also available in WorkSIM to be used in the planning process. After a 3D model is imported into WorkSIM, then the normal WorkSIM processes can be used to allow established rules to determine process requirements. This Process Oriented Visual Planning Tool (POV) interface is extremely important because it allows for the engineering content used in a product model to support process planning without manual entry of existing data or being constrained by the format of existing drawings. Traditional drawing outputs are designed to show narrow portions of a model and rarely allow for the entire product to be seen. Therefore, the planner is relied on to integrate the various views and layers into a complete mental picture. Using the product model directly and developing a workflow directly from the model allows the planner to make decisions based on facility and manpower constraints and not be constrained by the format of a drawing when developing the plan. Additionally, a user’s manual was developed for the interface between NavisWorks and WorkSIM. This manual guides the reader through the necessary steps and reduces the level of training required. Training on the use of this product was conducted at Vigor Industrial.
