Objective:
The goal of this project is to develop a fusion splice enclosure that may be mounted on or near equipment, to facilitate fusion spliced connections at the equipment.
Project Results:
This project developed a concept for a fusion splice enclosure small enough to be mounted on equipment racks and consoles, in order to eliminate the need for fiber optic connectors. The enclosure will accommodate four and eight fiber cable, blown optical fiber duct, and can be adapted for future cables containing ribbon fiber. Fusion splices are valuable for reducing optical impairments- especially those faced when using single mode optical fiber and high data rates. During project execution, team members used additive manufacturing in quick iteration cycles. Prototypes could be designed, fabricated, assembled, and evaluated simultaneously by multiple organizations.
