Objective:

The overall goal of the Ship Knowledge Management (SKM) project is to facilitate easy access to the 3D product model of the ship, system diagrams and the Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) products (e.g. Technical Manuals, Maintenance Standards, Ship System Manuals, etc.) for fleet support. The target of this project is to support easy information access of the future Columbia Class Submarine systems’ data.

Summary:

Today, technical and design data is delivered to the ship’s force by means of images of scanned 2D drawings. These images are then managed in the Navy’s Advanced Technical Information System (ATIS). The next generation of submarines will be product model-based and will not be supported by traditional drawings. The purpose of this project is to fill that gap. The problems addressed in this project involve making 3D product model design data available to shipboard personnel to make in-service repairs or analyze the layout of the ship.

The SKM project will establish a graphical shipboard data knowledge management system. The SKM system will enable ship’s force to have easy onboard access to the 3D product models, logistics documentation, and logistics product data that fully define the fit, form, and function of the ship.

In addition to ship wide visualization, the SKM system shall provide the product design disclosure that represents the approved design data for each particular hull. This data shall be functionally equivalent to the scanned engineering drawings currently managed in ATIS. The format of the design will be as a MIL-STD 31000A Technical Data Package. The SKM system also provides a “smart” version of 2D diagrams of ship systems with hotspot links to table data, logistics documents, connected electrical components and sheet to sheet references.

The SKM Project provides:

  • Centralized data repository of the light weight 3D Product Data Model and ILS data in digital format
  • “Smart” versions of 2D diagrams containing hotspot links to table data, logistics documents, connected electrical components and sheet to sheet references
  • A graphical shipboard data knowledge management system designed to support shipboard personnel to make in-service repairs or analyze the layout of the ship
