Portable Single-Pass Buried Arc Welding of Steel Plate During Ship Erection (2019-375-007)

The goal of the project is to reduce the cost and time associated with welding single-sided joints onboard vessels during ship erection, and to reduce plate preparation and post-weld straightening costs by using single-pass square groove Buried Arc Gas metal Arc Welding (GMAW-B).

The objectives of the project are:

1. Develop portable mechanized GMAW-B methods for the candidate application
2. Demonstrate that the developed GMAW-B methods can meet identified ABS/NAVSEA procedure qualification test requirements
3. Support implementation at a participating shipyard
