Objective:

This project was undertaken to develop a process for providing shipbuilding suppliers with digital design and manufacturing information by advancing technology from a Product Centric (2D hard copy drawings and sketches) to a Data Centric (3D product model) electronic environment. Technology allows organizations to collaborate virtually throughout the design, manufacturing, and production lifecycle. Knowledge and information sharing significantly shorten lead times and decrease the opportunities for defects.

The primary objectives of this project were to: define the requirements for providing shipbuilding suppliers with digital design and manufacturing Information; and identify a secure exchange medium that is readily accessible by suppliers for retrieving digital information during the procurement process.

The deliverable for this project was a documented process for providing suppliers with 3D design data to support material procurement.
