Objective:
This project was undertaken to standardize a technical criteria and scoring method that can assess shipbuilding suppliers. The project team utilized their past experiences and technical knowledge to create a Supplier Technical Assessment Process that can benefit each organization’s ability to manage their supplier base and identify material that is complex/critical or risky to manufacture. Industry and Government processes were evaluated, along with other Supplier Technical Assessments used by benchmarked companies in various industries, to develop a standardized method.
The primary objectives of this project were to: establish criteria for identifying complex/critical and risky parts and suppliers; standardize technical assessment criteria and scoring; and share assessments among prime contractors to reduce overall cost, minimize supplier burden and effectively increase the complex/critical supply base.
The project deliverable was a Supplier Technical Assessment Process Guide with supporting appendices with which to implement use of the Guide.
