Objective:

Develop a shipyard-neutral data schema and format that automatically translates material data attributes from a CAD/ Product Information Model system into an Enterprise Resource System.

Summary:

Translating material data captured in a shipyard’s Product Information Model (PIM) system into the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system is currently a manual process, time-consuming, inefficient, and error prone process. Operations, planning and procurement departments have been seeking more effective approaches.

The objective of this project is to mitigate errors and increase efficiency by developing a tool that automatically exchanges data between these two systems.

During development, it was determined that the neutral format of this tool lends itself to many activities, including materials handling scheduling and planning; however, after discussions with several shipyards, it was determined that focusing on only material data exchange for this project would achieve solid results within a relatively short timeline.
