Objective:
The goals and objectives of this project are as follows:
- Implement use of clearly written instructions and visual aids of what acceptable levels of cleanliness are and how to inspect them. This includes photographs of SAT and UNSAT conditions as examples.
- Work with private shipyards through onsite demonstrations and training to ensure understanding of the standard and how to achieve the requirements.
- Gather data and feedback demonstrating effectiveness of implementation of SP18 in private shipyards. This includes feedback from craft worker and Quality Assurance (QA) personnel.
- Make available the training documents and extend offerings for additional demonstrations.
Summary:
SSPC/AMPP recently published a new surface preparation standard titled “SSPC SP-18 Thorough Spot and Sweep Blast Cleaning for Industrial Coating Maintenance.” This standard will soon be adopted by both public and private shipyards during ship maintenance periods. This new standard provides instructions for how to blast existing coating systems in localized failures while still retaining intact coatings in the surrounding area, however proper guidance and instruction is needed to implement this process into the shipyard community. Current training and guidance from other industries and lessons learned from projects previously performed by the NSRP community will be used to implement SP-18 in shipyards and demonstrate potential cost and time savings to both users and customers. This training will allow all parties involved in the surface preparation process to understand the new standard, leading to less rework and time spent adjudicating differences in the interpretation of the language.
Key Deliverables / Benefits:
- Briefing to the Surface Preparation and Coating Panel at Panel Meetings
- Summary of Feedback from Shipyard Personnel after Demonstration
- Training documents with visual aids for Shipyard Personnel
- Final Training Documents for all partnering yards
