The Portable Single-Pass Buried Arc Welding of Steel Plate During Ship Erection Panel Project will host the final project demonstration at Austal on Wednesday, March 15, 2023. This NSRP Panel project focused on developing the data needed to implement gas metal arc welding (GMAW) for welding single-sided, single-pass square groove butt joints onboard vessels during ship erection. This GMAW-B process has the potential to:

• Reduce costly joint prep operations
• Reduce arc-on-time by up to 80%
• Reduce rework due to distortion
• Eliminate slag removal and risk of inclusions

Specific procedures that were developed and will be demonstrated at Austal include:

• Minimum and maximum root gap for both ½-in. DH 36 and 3/8-in. EH 36 steel plates
• Start/stop testing for both 3/8” and ½” thick plate
• 8’ weld on a 3/8” materials to demonstrate applicability for panel line welding

The demonstration is scheduled to begin at 7am CT and wrap-up around 2pm CT.
