2010
NSRP ASE Investment: $99K
Objective:
This project was aimed at designing and manufacturing truly portable and compact high rotational speed Friction-Stir Welding (HRS-FSW) machines and to incorporate innovative and proven HRS-FSW state-of-the-art technologies. The friction stir welding of aluminum structures in situations where standard, stand-alone friction stir welding machines cannot be used, and the repair of structures or plates, were the main application areas for this work. This effort succeeded in designing and constructing a man-portable, high rotational speed Friction-Stir Welding system that could be used for in-situ repairs of Navy vessels.
