Objective:

HII-NNS and HII-Ingalls will collaborate to research and benchmark the industry to replace fire zone insulation with spray applied “coating” product.

Summary:

Manual installation of insulation, and particularly fire zone insulation, is an extremely complex and cumbersome work practice, requiring significant labor hours to install. Nanotech products (particularly fire-resistant coatings) offer a significant opportunity to improve cost efficiency, labor productivity, and design flexibility in fire zone boundary systems.

Key Deliverables / Benefits:

Replacing manual installation (and eliminating the hot work & rework associated with shooting studs, the hand work to install and difficulty in making repairs) with a spray on product will save significant cost and schedule in the outfitting portion of the ship’s build.

Deliverables include a Final Report that documents results and follow-on efforts required.  The results of this project will be made available to the industry at large.
