Learning and Development Innovation

The objective of this project is to: (1) apply existing and commercially accessible technology to improve current approaches to On-the-Job-Training (OJT) for shipbuilding crafts; (2) create a methodology to retain and inventory critical institutional knowledge of shipbuilding craft skills; and (3) enhance current training for new craft managers to deploy standardized processes and allow for repeatability.

Retaining Critical Industry Knowledge

As part of this projects’ three-part approach, everyday work tasks are captured on video and made available in real-time to shipyard workers. This on-the-job technology is a dramatic departure from the current practice and may improve the proficiency of lower tier craft managers.

It also allows the corporate memory of Subject Matter Experts (SME) and Master Shipbuilders to be preserved for the future, which are areas of concern for most shipyards.
