Objective:

To design an embedded health management system into selected OHIO Replacement Class components with strong consideration for common VIRGINIA submarine components that will enable Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) for both submarine platforms.

Summary:

The VIRGINIA Class and OHIO Replacement Class submarines have stringent deployment and refit availability requirements that contribute to the high total ownership costs for these platforms. In order for submarines to meet these requirements in a more cost effective manner, this project will implement an on-board performance and health management/monitoring (PHM) information system to enable condition-based maintenance (CBM) and to actively predict fail-to-sail conditions before they occur. Performance and health management data will be used to identify a platform’s advanced supply support needs and to automatically initiate other logistic support functions.

The goal of this study is to implement an analytical process to determine the optimum maintenance and sustainment methodology and technology solution for reducing the total ownership cost of the submarine fleet

To achieve this goal, the following cumulative objectives are required to be accomplished:

  • Develop metrics that illustrate a reduction in the lifetime maintenance and support costs for the submarine fleet
  • Reduce the mean logistic delay time for the critical components being monitored by the health management system
  • Positively impact operational readiness of the ship and of the fleet
