Objective:
A study was conducted on the cost and benefits associated with the current U.S. Navy requirements for salt mitigation prior to applying protective coatings in critical coated areas and to determine if there is justification to relax the level of mitigation in limited areas after repeated attempts to remove the salt. The study identified technical data that suggested there was minimal performance risk associated with increasing the allowable surface salt concentration; however, there was also negligible potential for cost savings by relaxing the requirement.
