Objective:
To develop a conceptual design for OA compliant modular systems implemented using Electronic Modular Enclosures (EMEs) for application to medium to small size ships during new construction and modernization activities.
Summary:
The goal of this study is development of scalable electronic modular enclosures with footprints which can be used in existing or new construction spaces. This concept will be applicable to new construction platforms and the availability modernization of in-service vessels of any class. The EME, in conjunction with the Flexible Infrastructure system, will provide significant improvement in the ability to install and re-configure electronic equipment.
The goal of this study is to implement an analytical process to determine the optimum maintenance and sustainment methodology and technology solution for reducing the total ownership cost of the submarine fleet.
To achieve this goal, the following cumulative objectives are required to be accomplished:
- Develop an EME Requirement Specification which addresses life cycle concerns and can be tailored to multiple ship platforms.
- Develop a Baseline Solution concept that can be cost effectively designed and produced
- Illustrate a positive metric based cost/benefit business case which supports continued product development
This effort to develop processes supporting EME approach in future ships supports the Navy’s desire to move to a more modular approach to ship design and construction, and furthers the Navy’s goal of separating the payload from the platform. Upon completion of this project, it will be possible to provide standards to serve as the baseline for follow-on efforts to establish a standardized approach for future ship programs.
