Objective:
This project goal will to reduce the cost and time associated with weld and other metal removal tasks, including new construction, overhaul, maintenance, and repair operations. The WeldVac solution has the potential to reduce environmental waste and noise of the arc gouging process while also reducing fire hazards from uncontrolled slag generated by the arc gouging process. This project will also verify that WeldVac methods can produce satisfactory metal removal rates for welds and other materials in U.S. Navy and/or ABS steel and consistently meet the OSHA and other environmental regulations.
Summary:
Shipyard testing found several applications that, with further development, would greatly benefit from the technology. The process could be beneficially employed for metal removal in aluminum or other areas of high- value or delicate equipment. The Final Report provides recommendations for future development.
