Deep Penetration Laser-GMAW Welding

The project goal is to develop a laser-hybrid welding process, capable of fabricating single-pass 1” thick panels of AH36 steel. The initial focus of the project will be to produce a ¾” laser-hybrid weld penetration on a square butt land in a U-groove (or extended V-groove) butt joint preparation. A following, tandem-GMAW welding procedure will also be developed to complete the total 1” thick weld joint. The weld joint performance objectives will include specified tensile strength, Charpy impact properties, and weld zone hardness.
