Objective:

The project will reduce Total Ownership Cost of ships by providing a plan for utilizing advanced lighting technologies on new constructions and in-service ships based on the specific design of each ship type.  The lighting systems will provide ease of installation, long life, low maintenance, self-monitoring, and parts commonality.

The optimal topside lighting system will reduce ships’ TOC through the following:

  • Significantly increase the light sources’ life from that of the legacy devices;
  • Be simple to install by AITs trained in lighting and fiber optic systems installations;
  • Be easy to maintain when the ship is underway;
  • Provide real time health monitoring of the light sources;
  • Reduce / eliminate Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) to other topside equipment;
  • Reduce Radar Cross Section;
  • Reduce topside corrosion by use of composite materials;
  • Reduce topside weight;
  • Be adaptable to multiple ships’ classes;
  • Be compatible with multiple control systems and communication protocols.
