Objective
The goal of this project is to reverse engineer a 3D ship model for legacy ship programs built from 2D. The 3D model will allow these legacy programs to better utilize the digital shipbuilding processes being used for new construction programs, like the Ford, Virginia Classes, and Ohio Replacement Class.
Summary
This project seeks to solve a relevant industry-wide problem to integrate legacy, 2D drawing based ship programs, into emerging digital shipbuilding/business processes; such as Electronic Work Instructions (EWI) products. Navy shipbuilding maintenance and modernization projects require staggering amounts of data and documents, complex schedules, and huge quantities of materials and resources. Most maintenance and modernization activities today start with 2D drawings that provide little or no operational integration into a 3D planning and production environment. By providing engineering and constructions teams the ability to make full reuse of digital designs and rapidly create, validate, and approve new designs, the Navy will be able to reduce their overall fleet modernization and maintenance costs. This is supportive of the much longer-term vision of the all-digital shipbuilding enterprise that fully integrates product life cycle management using appropriate elements of shipbuilding data environment and related tools
