Objective:
The objective of this project is to leverage opportunities resulting from the recent approval and issuance of MIL-DTL-901E (Shock Tests, H.I. (High Impact) Shipboard Machinery, Equipment and Systems, Requirements for) to reduce the high cost of shock testing and qualification on U.S. Navy surface ships and submarines. Shock testing has been a significant cost driver and schedule concern for acquisition programs for many years, particularly for the lead ship of a class or a major baseline upgrade of an existing ship class.
Summary:
The project team will tackle several aspects of shock testing that are potential cost saving initiatives. Several opportunities are available to reduce the overall cost of shock qualification for the fleet.
The following subjects will be addressed in the project:
- Create standard test fixture designs for the Lightweight, Medium Weight and Deck Simulating Shock Machine (DSSM) shock machines
- Further develop and test a 25Hz tray for the Medium Weight or DSSM Machine
- Introduce a shock qualification process that eliminates or reduces test requirements for Grade B, low risk items
Key Deliverables / Benefits:
The project team will attack the cost drivers on multiple fronts such as
- Increased use of standard test fixtures
- Increased use of 25Hz trays on shock machines as opposed to testing on barges
- Qualification by inspection rather than testing for lower-risk items
All shipyards, vendors and Navy contractors will benefit from this project. Standardizing test fixtures, providing low cost alternatives for shock testing Class I items (25Hz) and simplifying the shock qualification process will save overall costs for all Navy contractors, whether the shipyard pays directly (in-house testing) or indirectly (vendor-provided testing) for the shock testing.
