Objective:

The goal of the project was to design and manufacture a cable that would be fully MIL-DTL-24643 compliant for use in U.S. Navy 13.8 kV, 60 Hz power systems.   The goal was to be realized by identifying new materials and/or modifying the cable construction in order to meet requirements for circuit integrity (i.e., must survive a 3-hour flame test for vital designated cables) and incorporating a water blocking system in the cable.  These improvements would need to be made without sacrificing performance in other areas that have been met already.

Summary:

A 15kV class cable was developed for U.S. Navy Carrier Program Office.  While said cable was under development, concessions had to be made in order to achieve reasonable flexibility so that the cable would be usable on a ship.  With a number of workarounds, the cables reached a certain level of acceptance but required a waiver as not all requirements for MIL-SPEC cable could be met.
