Objective:

This project assisted in furthering shipbuilding opportunities associated with potential U.S.-based Short Sea Shipping operations by analyzing the application of the “Virtual Shipyard” concept and leveraging foreign partnerships and overseas successes related to design, construction and supply chain business practices. A workshop was held between suppliers and shipbuilders to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of implementing Short Sea Shipping within international and national commercial industries. It was determined that the costs of shipbuilding is not the root-cause for the lack of Marine Highway operations and that there might be a need for the Navy to subsidize possible service, until the supply chain increases.
