Overview

Navy Tank Study for Robotics Applications

(2018-455-019)

Project Team:

HII-Newport News Shipbuilding

HII-Ingalls Shipbuilding

2020

NSRP ASE INVESTMENT: $113K

Objective:

The purpose of this project is to evaluate tanks across multiple ship platforms at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) and Ingalls Shipbuilding.  These tanks will be categorized based on similarities and differences so that the tanks that share the most in common can be identified and evaluated for a common robotic solution in the future.  The objectives include:

  • Identify the tanks that share the most in common so that any future robotic solutions can be applied to a broad range of tanks across the Navy
  • Consult with industry experts on robotic/automated solutions that currently exist or can be developed for the tanks that share the most in common
  • Identify robotic solutions that enable the elimination of manned entry from these tanks without compromising quality or schedule.

NSRP is co-funded by the U.S. Shipbuilding Industry and U.S. Navy
