NSRP ASE INVESTMENT: $150K
Objective:
The goal of this project is to develop a cost-effective solution for not so highly-skilled manual weld operators to make smaller fillet welds in compliance with the welding procedure specification.
The objectives include:
- Demonstration system including the IMU sensor based torch based speed monitoring sub-system, control sub-system for the power source
- Lower-cost training of weld operators
Results:
The project developed algorithms, hardware and software to effectively adapt FCAW welding parameters (wire feed, voltage and current) that maintain weld bead size during variations in travel speed, during mechanized and manual welding. The system was successfully demonstrated by welders at HII-Ingalls Shipbuilding.
