Objective:
The ultimate goal of this project was to create a set of standards for intermodal shipping containers utilized across all military services. Adoption of these new standards will ensure interoperability between the Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Military Sealift Command of containerized military modules for shipboard use, ease of transport by ship or air (see Figure 2), and streamlined design of shipboard connections to containerized modules. Standardization of these containerized modules will benefit all shipbuilders and military services by eliminating rework required to align shipboard piping and electrical connections each time new containerized workshops or living spaces are brought onboard.
The project team developed a standard container design with standardized arrangement for connections to the host ship and, through rigorous finite element analysis, validated the design for safety military use aboard ships at sea.
