Project Team:

Huntington Ingalls Inc- Newport News Shipbuilding

NSRP ASE INVESTMENT: $124K

Objective:

Shipboard fire incidents during industrial construction and maintenance activities posed a significant threat to fielding the required naval force strength. This project sought to improve industry collaboration and sharing of lessons learned to address both cultural and technical risks that contribute to fires. The project included comparison and gap analysis of regulatory and industry requirements to determine if risks can be reduced through further definition of requirements. The report also summarized and recommended means to improve industry-wide collaboration and provided a collection of lessons learned relative to management of ordinary combustible materials in the industrial environment as an example of the information that could be gained through better collaboration.

Project Deliverables:

(1) A method or method(s) to provide for information sharing and collaboration on fire safety best practices and lessons learned.

(2) A gap analysis of primary fire safety requirements applicable shipbuilding and repair work in an industrial environment.

(3) A summary of best practices associated with management of ordinary combustible materials.
