- Norfolk Naval Shipyard
April 2017 – April 2019
NSRP ASE INVESTMENT: $441K
INDUSTRY INVESTMENT: $441K
OBJECTIVE:
This project proposed to incorporate augmented reality as an integral component of skills-based training.
This project demonstrated the use of a complementary instructional AR technology application (app) during formal, instructor-led training, and explored the potential for extending this emerging technology to informal, continuous, on-the-job training. Project results and evaluation data helped determine how shipyards can best utilize this use of augmented reality to reduce the cost of training delivery and increase jobsite productivity and performance.
SUMMARY:
This project addressed shipyard skills-based courses which do not apply 21st century technology in the:
- Reduction of inefficiencies which increase the classroom seat time and associated costs
- Replacement of costly mock-ups or graphics based scenarios
- Extension of job performance support on the deckplate
The goal of this effort was to demonstrate the effective use of an emerging technology application for conducting formal instructor-led training – with the potential to extend the technology to informal continuous training on the deckplate. This goal was accomplished by incorporating augmented reality as an integral part of skills-based courses. The resulting AR application provided 3D visualization of equipment that overlays part identification data, step-by-step work instructions, and safety information to provide immersive technical training, resulting in an improvement in the employee’s time and ability to accurately complete maintenance/repair work. The Augmented Reality team developed both the instructional strategy and the app for a group of pilot trainees, which will also provide an opportunity to collect measurable data to support the use of AR as a valid training tool.
