Objective:
The objectives of this project were to provide a basis for extending 72 Inch Physical Open Architecture (POA) Enclosure Systems to DDG and CG ships and to define processes, skill levels, and organizational responsibilities for implementing 72 Inch POA Enclosure Systems.
This will provide: the ability to easily insert cutting edge technology as it evolves; commonality and extendibility of components among systems and ships; flexibility in varying physical system configurations; a reduction in acquisition and life-cycle costs by buying components at the drawer; and reduced test time and costs.
Project Results
DDG and CG spaces that will benefit from 72 inch POA enclosures were identified by HII-Ingalls and rearrangement concepts were developed. Arrangements indicated ~8 spaces containing 36 enclosures in DDGs and ~37 spaces containing 124 enclosures in CGs are possible candidates for POA rearrangements.
Evaluation of shock, vibration, and EMI requirements for CVN, DDG, and CG platforms as it relates to POA enclosure systems show that CVN requirements either overlap or are the same as DDG and CG platforms. As a result, the approved technical extension basis used for 72 inch POA enclosures on CVN ships will be sufficient for DDG and CG ships.
Processes, skill levels, and organizational responsibilities associated with POA enclosure builds, testing, ship outfitting, and enclosure configuration management associated with what HII-NNS does for CVN ships may serve as a model for other organizations seeking to implement POA.
