2021

NSRP ASE INVESTMENT: $301K

OBJECTIVE:

The Electrical Cable Fire Protection RA project will research and integrate a fire protection technology to enhance the life of Navy ships by coating electrical cables with an intumescent coating. The project will demonstrate the Fire Security product, FS1, which is an intumescent fire protection coating applied in a similar manner to other shipboard paint systems.

SUMMARY

This project will focus on demonstrating the application of the FS1 intumescent coating within a mock-up emulating an area onboard a Navy ship with confined spaces and equipment that requires masking.

Phase 0 includes research and coordination with NAVSEA Acquisition Program Offices to determine any impediments to adoption of the FS1 technology while also addressing technical questions regarding weight, procedural steps, and repair methods.  Phase I will include the design and development of a mock-up including electrical cables mounted in cable tray(s) for the purpose of conducting a demonstration by trained Fire Security personnel so that NAVSEA and shipyards can witness.

FS1 provides a significant improvement on survivability and reducing fire spread on legacy PVC cables and modern electric power cables which are now procured in accordance with MIL-DTL-24643 requiring a low smoke, zero halogen electric power cable.
