Objective:
This project developed and demonstrated verification and validation (V&V) guidance that government agencies and the shipbuilding and ship repair industry can use jointly and collaboratively to establish trust in the wide range of technologies and applications often referred to as Digital Twins.
Summary:
This project was divided into four key tasks: (1) Build a common digital twin ontology, (2) Develop a V&V framework for digital twin models and applications, (3) Demonstrate the V&V framework using existing digital twin demonstration cases from project participants, and (4) Publish and promote ABS Guidance Notes for Verification and Validation of Models, Simulations, and Digital Twins.
Tasks 1 and 2 relied on detailed literature review of existing published Digital Twin definitions and descriptions as well as existing public standards for V&V of models and simulations. The existing literature was used as a foundation to establish an ontology that described Digital Twins as a federation of models and simulations. This allowed the project to leverage the extensive existing literature for verification and validation for models and simulations, and then adapt this for digital twins as a special case of the existing guidance and best practices.
Key Deliverables / Benefits:
Project participants reported that the implementation of the V&V framework will provide a means for ensuring that the models were verified/validated appropriately, and multiple people have signed off on the V&V process.
Measurable benefits for time savings included reduction in (1) learning curve costs for organizations launching or upgrading their Digital Twin technology (2) developer costs for V&V of Digital Twin technology application, and (3) Technical Authority costs for V&V of Digital Twin technology.
