Objective:

This project investigated a paradigm shift to a model where:  (1) ship system components are serviced by a minimum number of optical networks, (2) technical improvements introduced in commercial networks and data centers are commonly used, (3) shipyards are responsible for installation of the networks, and (4) widely recognized interface standards define the boundary between the network and the client equipment.  The project team accomplished the following tasks:

  • Identified interface protocols and specifications commonly used in ships
  • Evaluated the ecosystem for common component performance and projected costs
  • Identified established optical network architectures and standards
  • Developed a cost model for new designs, life cycle management, and upgrades
  • Developed a roadmap for implementation
