Objective:
The purpose of this project was to evaluate the patented Tip Tig system in comparison with standard Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) and to identify potential shipbuilding applications where it could be beneficial. The Tip Tig process is a semi-automatic, hot wire variant of manual GTAW where continuously fed, preheated filler metal significantly improves the deposition rate. The project determined that there are several candidate shipyard applications that could benefit from Tip Tig welding’s improved efficiency (5 to 1 improvement), but they are primarily in off-hull work centers since the equipment prohibits welding in constrained spaces.
