Tank Boundary and Penetration Testing

  • Tank Boundary and Penetration Testing
Overview

Tank Boundary and Penetration Testing (2005-333-R13)

Project Team:

  • General Dynamics NASSCO
  • General Dynamics Bath Iron Works
  • Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering

2011

NSRP ASE Investment: $99K

Objective:

Utilizing knowledge gained from process improvements instituted at NASSCO, along with best practices from other leading U.S. and Asian shipyards, this study describes ways to identify and optimize those testing methods currently mandated by Classification Societies and Owner requirements. In addition to investigating shipyard best practices for the testing of tank structural boundaries, this project also introduces methods to test outfit penetration welds prior to completion of the tank that they make-up. The project also includes research into automating the generation of Production Information of tank boundary tests as direct outputs from modern Computer Aided Design tools such as the Tribon M3 3-D modeling system as used at NASSCO.
