The objectives of this project expanded upon the successfully completed panel project, Swage Panel Analysis Verification, through research and testing of large-scale swage bulkheads to develop direct analysis and design methodologies for swaged bulkheads as load-carrying structural components.
The project was divided into three phases:
Phase 1: Compare bulb stiffened and swaged bulkheads Phase 2: Study the effect of swage geometry, plate thickness and steel grade on swaged bulkhead analysis Phase 3: Study the effect of cutouts and penetrations, additional stiffeners and a combination of these on swaged bulkhead analysis.
Final project results include:
- In the FEA, loads required to achieve displacements did not match those measured in physical test.
- Boundary conditions during physical test did not allow for pure shear loading.
- Despite tests’ departure from intended pure shear loading, data collected still highly valuable.
- Comparisons made between swage and stiffened bulkheads earlier in the project remain valid because all were tested under identical conditions.
Based on the project results, the project team determined that additional study on the strength characteristics of swaged bulkheads would allow more conclusive and comprehensive bulkhead design guidance and rules for incorporation in the ABS Steel Vessel Rules. The project team was awarded a follow-on project, “Swage Panel SVR.”
