Objective:
This project investigated the performance of “single coat” tank coating systems over retained preconstruction primer. Testing conducted as part of the project suggests that either brush blasting or pressure washing are suitable methods of secondary surface preparation prior to applying single coat materials over retained preconstruction primer. However, the data also suggests that there is some finite performance risk associated with applying single coat products over retained pre-construction primer. It is recommended to continue simulated ballast tank exposure testing and try to identify an opportunity for shipboard demonstration of single coat application over PCP. A second phase of the project has been funded to continue these efforts.
