Objective:
The project goal was to advance the Tandem Gas Shielded process by adapting it to flux backing in order to better integrate with mechanized panel line welding installations in shipyards. A variety of solid, flux cored and metal cored electrodes with variations in diameter and shielding gas were tested. Variations were introduced in torch spacing and angle, flux material, flux pressure, travel speed, voltage, wire feed, cup to work distance, and advanced settings on the power supplies. At present, tandem gas shielded torches, in an effort to lower weld heat input, combined with flux backing appears very temperamental. The fact that, periodically, successful welds were made suggests that sufficient control and/or new parameter variations yet untested may result in a robustly repeatable procedure to consider for production.
