Objective:
This project sought to obtain a permanent variance to the OSHA requirements of 4” coating removal from any area of heat application. After comprehensive field testing, it was demonstrated that the preservative coatings used in the construction of Navy vessels do not pose an employee health risk that warrants the currently required 4” removal of coating prior to hot work, thus reducing the cost and time required to prep hot work sites. It was concluded that a 2-inch stripping requirement would provide the same level of employee protection while reducing other health and safety risks associated with the requisite paint stripping operations.
Key Deliverables:
Request Final Report from NSRP – Limited Distribution authorized to U.S. shipyards and NSRP ASE Program representatives
