2015
NSRP ASE Investment: $149K
Objective:
The goal of this project was to quantify the risks and benefits of substituting a partial blast for a full blast during re-preservation of tanks and/or voids with ultra-high solids coatings on surface ships and demonstrate the concept on an active Navy ship. During the project, partial blast surface preparation of ultra-high solids epoxy coatings was observed on an LHA well deck overhead and on the interior superstructure of a Trident class submarine. The project generated consistent cost savings data from both demonstrations. The work has shown that partial blast can be effectively performed in a contract work environment and result in considerable cost savings. Based on the success of this project, further work should also attempt to quantify the performance risk associated with partial blast approaches.
