Project Team:
- Edison Welding Institute
- Newport News Shipbuilding
2008
NSRP ASE Investment: $97K
Objective:
This project, a follow-up to a previous year’s panel project, initiated the implementation of standard welding procedures for Navy applications. The objective of this project was to reduce the cost of redundant qualification of welding procedures by: 1) defining the requirements to permit prime contractors to provide qualified welding procedures to their vendors and subcontractors; and, 2) implementing standard welding procedures for Navy applications. As a result of this project, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) defined the requirements that will permit a prime contractor to provide qualified welding procedures to their vendors and subcontractors. NAVSEA and ABS also defined changes to procedure qualification requirements to permit the use of American Welding Society (AWS) and NAVSEA Standard Welding Procedures for Naval Applications (SWPS-N). The American Welding Society approved the development of AWS/NAVSEA SWPS-Ns and a Task Group was formed to coordinate AWS, Navy, and industry support to develop these procedures.
