Objective:
As a cost-effective alternative to current specifications, this project worked to improve the process of ultra-high-pressure water jet blasting surface preparation in shipyards by reducing the impact of flash rust concerns. Physical inspections and assessments of coating systems applied over varying degrees of flash rust resulted in a recommendation to allow coating systems to be applied over moderate flash rust on Navy ships. A deck plate guidebook for measuring flash rust was also developed and made available to industry.
