Objective:
With a focus on finding alternative, more cost-effective specifications, this project investigated the basis of the requirement to maintain 50% relative humidity while painting tanks, and submitted a set of recommended procedure changes to NAVSEA Standard Item 009-32 that avoid the excessive cost of maintaining low humidity conditions but still ensure proper coating performance. It was determined that relaxing the 50% relative humidity requirement in low risk-high cost situations has the potential to create real savings for the Navy without incurring substantial risk. Four of the project team’s procedure changes were subsequently approved by the Standard Specifications for Ship Repair and Alteration Committee (SSRAC).
