Objective:
This project is a follow up to an earlier project completed in 2013, and is focused on leveraging the rich data available in Detail Design models to improve the weight engineering process. During detail design, the shipyards’ business process invests heavily in the product model for planning, purchasing, and production purposes. Collecting, analyzing, and reporting weight data is usually done in a separate business process, which often lags behind the product model because of the laborious process of accurately transferring detail design data and consistently tracking additions, deletions, and modifications of the items in the product model.
The goal of this project is to build on the previous work to save the US Navy and Industry money by improving the business process of transferring data from detail design to weight engineering. By creating a fast, accurate, and consistent data exchange process, shipyards will be able to update their mass properties database more frequently, providing timely insight into any developing weight and/or CG issues.
